HOW DOES CHRISTIAN DANCE DIFFER FROM SECULAR DANCE?

  • The focus is on Jesus where secular dance focuses on the dance and the dancer.
  • The motive is to glorifying God, to worship Him in spirit and truth in the beauty of holiness. It is not to please man or to entertain or impress man, always seeking to please Him. Where secular dance focuses on the dancer and the dance movements. Secular dance focuses on pleasing the audience.

1 Cor. 1.31 "Let him who boasts and proudly rejoices and glories, boast and proudly rejoice and glory in the Lord."

  • Christian dance is not mere movement performed to music but an outward response of our inward love and awe of God.

Mark 12.30 we are called to "love our God with all our heart, soul and body."

  • Christian dance is a celebration of colour and movement that conveys a biblical message.
  • Secular dance pleases the physical senses, but Christian dance reaches into the soul and penetrates the spirit.
  • Christian dance springs forth out of an attitude of worship, it originates in the heart of the dancer.

Dancing without an attitude of worship and the inspiration and anointing of the Holy Spirit means nothing, no matter how graceful and professional it may be, it cannot please God, it may charm the eyes but will never touch the lives of those watching.

Col 3:17:"And whatever we do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him."

IS CHIRSTIAN DANCE SCRIPTURAL?

Psalm 150:
"Praise the Lord! Praise God in His sanctuary; praise Him in the heavens of his power!
Praise Him for His mighty acts; praise him according to the abundance of His greatness!
Praise Him with trumpet sound; praise Him with lute and harp!
Praise Him with tambourine and [single or group} dance; praise him with stringed and wind instruments or flutes!
Praise Him with resounding cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals!
Let everything that has breath and every breath of life praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord!"
(Amplified Bible)

God wants us to use our bodies to glorify Him.

1 Corinthians 6: 19-20:
"Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own. For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s."

[Message Bible]
"Your body is a sacred place, the place of the Holy Spirit. Don’t you see that you can’t live however you please, squandering what God paid such a high price for? The physical part of you is not some piece of property belonging to the spiritual part of you. God owns the whole works. So let people see God in and through your body. "

 Romans12.1-2
I appeal to you therefore, brethren, and beg of you in view of [all] the mercies of god, to make a decisive dedication of your bodies [presenting all your members and faculties] as a living sacrifice, holy (devoted, consecrated) and well pleasing to god, which is your reasonable (rational, intelligent) service and spiritual worship.

Do not conform to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs] but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideas and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourself] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of god, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you.]" Amplified Bible.

Miriam led the women in dancing – Ex.15:19-21

David - 2.Sam. 6:14 David pleased God with dancing, not because of his dance, but because of his love for God.

We are called to praise God:

  • Let us constantly and at all times offer up to God a sacrifice of praise Heb.13:15.
  • Put on the garment of expressive praise instead of the a heavy, burdened, and failing spirit
    – amplified Is. 61: 3
  • Ps. 150:1-4 everything that has breath praise the Lord.
  • Praise is an antidote when attacked praise precedes victory– 2 Chronicles 20:22.
  • Praise in extreme adversity Job.1:20. Acts.16:22-25 read
  • Praise is part of restoration and renewal _ Jer. 31: 3-5 ;11-14 Read
  • God dwells in the praises of his people Ps.22:3
  • Praise generates power Ps 84.

Praise – in the Hebrew language:

  • Yadah – to give forth confession of thanks Ps.145.10
  • Towdah – The extension of the hands in adoration and thanksgiving Ps.50:23
  • Barak – to kneel in adoration Judges 5:2
  • Gil – dancing for joy, leaping for joy, to spin around with intense motion Hab.3:18 Zep. 3:17

Dance is an instrument of worship just as a musical instrument or a singer is an instrument of worship.

Dancing is not sinful or of the devil – but anything done for the wrong motive and that does not glorify God is sinful ( Col.3:17 1 Cor. 9:31)

There were times that their dances were to idols e.g. to the golden calf. This grieved God

and resulted in judgement and destruction. Is our reason and motive for dancing pure?

Unless ones heart is right with God and one’s fellow man, one’s dancing is in the flesh and a distraction.

Roman 12:1 tells us we need to present our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to Him.
